Dr. David McLean, MD, FRCPC

Dr. McLean is a Professor of Dermatology and former Head of Dermatology at the University of British Columbia. Formerly the President of the Canadian Dermatology Association, he is now Secretary-General of the International League of Dermatologic Societies.

As former Vice-President of Research at the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, he oversaw more than 250 IP and clinical trials agreements each year. Dr. McLean has participated in numerous start-up companies in his career and he holds six US patents.

 

Dr. Rolf Hoffmann, MD

A former President of the European Hair Research Society, Dr. Hoffmann is a top European researcher in the fields of alopecia, endocrinology of the hair follicle and hair follicle morphogenesis. He has published over 100 medical journal articles and contributed to numerous dermatology text books.

Dr Hoffmann received his education in biochemistry and dermatology at the University of Freiburg, Germany, one of Europe's top centers for biology research. He is currently a teaching Professor in the Department of Dermatology for Marburg University, one of the country's leading medical schools, and is working in his private practice.

Dr Hoffmann is the inventor of TrichoScan, the world's first GCP-approved technique to measure hair growth. He is also the director of Tricholog GmbH, a company that provides software and services for automated digital analysis of hair growth measurements to the dermatology community.

 

Dr. Kevin McElwee, PhD

Chief Scientific Officer
An Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Skin Health at the University of British Columbia, Dr. McElwee has published over 120 medical journal articles, research abstracts, and academic book chapters on hair loss research. He is regularly invited to give review presentations at hair research conferences.

Presently the Director of the Hair Research Laboratory in the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), Dr. McElwee is one of fewer than ten research scientists worldwide who exclusively study hair biology and associated diseases as a full time career. He has worked as a hair research scientist for 14 years.

Currently, Dr. McElwee is a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar and Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator. His research is funded by competitive grants awarded by multiple organizations including the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (equivalent of the National Institutes for Health in the USA).

 

Dr. Jerry Shapiro, MD, FRCPC

Medical Director, North America
Dr. Shapiro has been specializing in hair disorders for the past 22 years. He holds dual academic appointments as Clinical Professor and Adjunct Professor at both the University of British Columbia and New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Shapiro manages one of the busiest hair restoration practices in the world and is considered one of the most experienced hair dermatologists internationally.

Dr Shapiro has published numerous articles on the clinical and basic science of hair disorders in prestigious, peer-reviewed medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine. He also has authored numerous book chapters and two textbooks on hair disorders.

Dr. Shapiro is past President of the North American Hair Research Society and Canadian Society of Investigative Dermatology. He is founder and President of the Canadian Hair Research Foundation. Dr. Shapiro has lectured internationally, served as Chairman of the World Congress of Hair Research Societies and has been featured on national TV and radio and in newspapers and magazines.

 

Dr. Harvey Lui, MD, FRCPC

Director of Medical Operations
Dr. Lui is the Medical Director of the Vancouver General Hospital Skin Care Centre, the largest medical facility in Canada devoted to dermatology. He is also the head of the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at the University of British Columbia, which is the first and only academic dermatology department in Canada.

After receiving his MD and dermatology specialization from the University of British Columbia, Dr. Lui was a Clinical Fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lui is a member of the American Board of Dermatology, the North American Hair Research Society, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is a past president of the Canadian Dermatology Association and currently serves as the Director of the VGH Photomedicine Institute as well as the Skin Research Training Centre for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr Lui's clinical and research interests include lasers, photomedicine, hair disorders, and cutaneous dyspigmentation. He has been the principal investigator in over 35 research projects, has published over 150 medical journal articles and abstracts, and holds five patents.
